BookTubeAThon Diary: Day Four (02/08/18)

Header

General thoughts: I cannot believe that we’re well past the halfway point of BTAT 2018 already – this week has been flying by. I’m so pleased to say that I managed to finish another book today, though! I picked up Stardust by Neil Gaiman from where I left off the night before, and although it was one of the most highly anticipated of the reads on my TBR for this week, unfortunately it fell slightly short of my expectations.

I was already familiar with the story of Stardust after having seen the film some years ago and loving it. Had I known that it was based on a book sooner though, I would have definitely made the effort to pick it up. Due to that, my experience reading the source material was unfortunately slightly skewed by previous knowledge. That being said, either way I feel like this book would have come out as slightly underwhelming for me. The characters were interesting enough, and the world especially was engrossing; I just wish that we were given more of it. I feel like the whole of the Faerie land (and Wall, for that matter) could have been given so much more intricacy and history, so I couldn’t help but feel that lack. The characters, for me, may also have benefited from some more backstory to really help us understand their motivations. Despite these criticisms, I do feel as though Gaiman managed to weave a tale that was both important in its relevance to the fairy tale genre, and one that clearly reflected his own stylistic and imaginative flair.

Tomorrow, I plan to pick up Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett (the continuing theme of stars was completely unintentional for this readathon!) After jumping between three distinctly different fantasy/magical realist worlds in the last four days, I’m really looking forward to a bit of respite by rejoining the world of contemporary YA for a while.

Pages read today: 169

Total pages read so far: 750

Challenges completed today: 0 (Technically I read the book for the film adaptation challenge today, but I just won’t be able to watch the film this week unfortunately – 1/2 a point?)

Total challenges completed so far: 2

Total books read so far: 3

My Instagram challenge submission: The photo challenge just kind of got away from me today. I was thinking about participating, but then I was busy, and then the good lighting was gone by the time I got home…

Please let me know if you’ve read any Neil Gaiman, and which of his works you’d recommend. I definitely want to give his writing another shot!

Have a beautiful day,
